Are you using Twitter as a marketing tool?

I have been quite active on Twitter for some time now and have analysed a few thing. I have seen people using Twitter as a mean for marketing their product or services or just self promotion, I do like twitter as a mean for marketing but as I go deeper I see nothing much which can make a difference than the other sites, because my screen is updated with tweets very fast and I miss out a lot of people’s tweets. If one gives time to just analyse the screen, there wont be a chance when you have seen all the tweets quite easily, the problem here is that people have lot many in their following list (even I do have), but I dont see anyone who are able to utilise Twitter as a marketing tool to its full potential, there are many few people on twitter who have understood the real and practical working of Twitter and are able to utilise it efficiently. Twitter is very different from other social media, and is very fast, you need to keep up the pace too.

But when one tries to be fast on twitter they ultimately land themselves among the spammers and are at the risk of losing their account (suspended/banned). As each day passes the users are at the risk of loosing the potential of Twitter as a marketing tool because more and more people are following more and the chances of loosing your message increases more. Twitter’s potential doesnt depend upon the number of followers you have or the number of people you are following but it basically depends on the number of followers your followers have. These are all myths as far as I can say that as the number of retweets increases you ultimately get more traffic. This is in a sense is not correct as your message is delivered to the people active on twitter at that current time, not everyone will be able to see your message, infact only a few people will be able to see it depending on their following list, the more they follow the less chances of your message to be seen on their screens, out of these few people who see your message only a part of them will either click on the link or retweet it. We cannot expect full throttle of traffic if your followers have a huge following list. Just remember “Twitter potential lies not in your follower’s list it lies in your follower’s follower list”.

Do you allow everyone who knocks on your door to come into your house? No… same way Twitter is as we dont want salesman and solicitors to come in, same way Twitter is, choose your follower and following list wisely else you end up having more and more spammers in your list and gain nothing in the end. Keep track of your following list and remove the one’s who are inactive and be interactive with your follower, this will certainly help you gain momentum and can utilise twitter as a marketing tool.
